The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) System Subclass 601 is a travel stream visa to visit Australia for multiple short stays for tourism, business, and family purposes. The ETA is a short and simplified application form that enables the traveller to visit Australia multiple times for a period of 12 months, or until his or her passport expires and Australia is the last port of departure, whichever is earlier. The ETA is designed to quickly and easily enable multiple short stays.

If your visit is for training or study regarding fields such as childcare centers, or if you wish to undertake activities in or as a nurse in a hospital or any other health-related areas, you will have to apply for a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa instead of the ETA. This is due to the fact that such activities require additional health assessments
If you sail on a cruise that arrives in Australia, and you wish to get off the ship, you will need an ETA. On round-trip cruises that start and end in Australia, the time that you spend on the cruise is treated as time spent in Australia. It will apply to the duration of your Visa; the length of the cruise will not extend the allowable time on your Visa. You must check with your cruise operator whether your trip is classified as a round trip.
As a business visitor on an ETA, you are allowed to:
Performing any work for an Australian employer, or providing work for remuneration, is expressly forbidden under the ETA. Under this Visa, supplying goods or services directly to the Australian public is also not allowed.
The ETA is a type of temporary Visa, which is valid for a maximum of 12 months, or until the expiry of the user’s passport. It allows for multiple entries into Australia, with each visit lasting up to 3 months. It permits the Visa holder to leave and return to Australia multiple times within the time frame of the Visa’s validity period.
The ETA extension may not be applicable for the full duration of the three-month stay, per visit. In the case you wish to stay longer, you need to apply for a visa that is above the ETA, as it exceeds the myriads of conditions the ETA visa holds. If you remain in Australia post the expiry of your ETA Visa, without a valid Visa, you shall be in a state of illegal non-citizen status, and may be subject to deportation.
The assumption is made that each ETA application is for the individual applying. All spouses and children cannot be included in and made a part of one application. Every individual is required to submit an application form independently.
An individual must reside outside of Australia to apply for an ETA at the time the Visa is being issued. The process is relatively simple, and in most cases, immediate feedback is provided. Â

Within the duration of the ETA, its holder assumes responsibility for their healthcare expenses, hence the need for medical insurance to prevent incurring unexpected expenses for medical services. In addition, some countries may have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Australia. For more information, refer to the Services Australia site concerning reciprocal healthcare agreements.
Your ETA permits you to enter and exit Australia as many times as you want, as long as it is valid. There is no physical visa sticker as the ETA is linked electronically to the passport. Expiration of the ETA or passport renewal makes it necessary for an individual to reapply for the ETA, which was previously electronically linked to the expired passport.Â
ETA Subclass 601 allows eligible travelers to enter Australia for tourism, business, or family purposes. It provides great flexibility. To facilitate smooth travel, visas should be applied for from outside and their conditions complied with, including limits on maximum stay. Effective planning for the travel is also necessary.
